Our department faculty have had a very busy summer. Here are some of the recent accomplishments.
Professor Mike Smith will have an upcoming exhibition of photographs at the University of Kentucky Art Museum, November, 2009. His work was recently reviewed by the curator of photographs at the High Museum for inclusion in an exhibition there.
Professor Don Davis was included in the exhibition, “The Sanctuary of the Etruscan Artisans at Cetamura Del Chianti: The Legacy of Alvaro Tracchi,” June 13-July 12, 2009 at Casa Masaccio Museum in San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy. The exhibition, including his kiln model is now on long-term display in Badia a Coltibuono, Italy near the Cetamura archaeological site. The project was supported by an ETSU Summer Research Fellowship in Arts and Sciences and an ETSU Research Development Committee Grant.
Professor Davis is included in the exhibition SOUTHEAST:CERAMICS Invitational Exhibition, McMaster Gallery, University of South Carolina, October 12th - November 19th, 2009 and will serve on an artist panel discussion which accompanies the show.
Professor Catherine Murray will be exhibiting new sculpture and mixed media drawings in a one person exhibition at Sechrest Gallery, High Point University, High Point, NC, from Nov. 3- Dec. 15, 2009.
Professor Murray will also have work in the exhibition “From These Hills 2009: Contemporary Art in the Appalachian Highlands”, at the William King Museum, Abingdon, VA. This biennial exhibition was curated by Ray Kass, Professor Emeritius, VA Tech and will be on display Oct. 22, 2009- Feb. 14, 2010.
One of her outdoor pieces was selected for the Kingsport Sculpture Walk, 2009-10, Kingsport, TN, curated by Hank Foreman, Director of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, Appalachian State University. Another outdoor piece was chosen for “Expositions in Glass: Outdoor Sculpture 2009”, Courthouse Galleries at the Portsmouth Museums, Portsmouth, VA. , a year long show which runs through Oct. 11, 2009.
Associate Professor Mira Gerard received a fellowship for a month-long residency in August, 2009 at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont.

Associate Professor Pat Mink had a piece, "Appalachian Landscape II", exhibited in Quilt National 2009 in Athens, OH , May- September, 2009.
Her piece "Farm History II" was included in the exhibition "ARTQUILTransitions" in Allenton and Semans Galleries at the Durham Arts Council, Durham, NC, at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center, Cary, NC, and will be on display at the Fayetteville Museum of Art from September 12 - November 3, 2009.
"Farm Ghost I" & "Farm Ghost II" continue in the international exhibition "Inspired Design Creative Entrepreneurial Textiles" and will be on display at the Gregg Museum at NCSU in Raleigh, NC during the months of Sept & Oct. As part of this exhibition she will participate in a panel discussion on Jacquard Weaving, and give a presentation of her work.
"#21 Revisited" will travel in the exhibition "Soul's Journey" to the Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, SC from Oct. 15th through Jan. 10th. This exhibition is in conjunction with the upcoming PBS documentary "SOUL'S
JOURNEY: INSIDE THE CREATIVE PROCESS", in which Pat Mink was also a participant.
Professor Mink received the Arts and Sciences Summer Research Fellowship for her proposal "Expanding the Digital Quilt: Combining Digital Weave Structures with Digital Printing". She spent the month of June weaving personal imagery into cloth on industrial Jacquard power looms at the Oriole Mill in Hendersonville, NC.
She also received a RDC grant in April for her proposal "Digital Cloth:
The Power Loom as a Tool for Contemporary Fiberart".
Assistant Professor Travis Graves was the exhibit “Magnitude SEVEN” at the Manifest Gallery, Cincinnati, OH, in June 2009.
He had a solo show titled “When Enough is Enough” at the Brunswick Street Gallery in Fitzroy, Australia, in July, 2009.
Also in July he participated in the “Three-Minute Film Festival “ at Root Division in San Francisco, CA.
Professor Graves is currently in an online exhibit through Iowa State University called “30 and Beyond”.

Visiting Assistant Professor Stacey Isenbarger had a solo show: "Source Derivations: Recent Sculptural Works by Stacy Isenbarger” , at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery, Coastal Carolina University, July – August, 2009. www.coastal.edu/bryanartgallery
Visiting Assistant Professor Anna Kell was invited to participate in Accessibility 2009, an artist's residency in Cleveland, Tennessee. 8 artists will be in residence at Cleveland State Community College making new works out of re-used materials found in the area.
Instructor and Art Annex Technician Jackson Martin installed his sculpture, "Rooted" for the Baltimore Sculpture Project, which will be on view until May 2010.
Martin is currently in an exhibition at the Ewing Gallery on the campus of UT Knoxville titled "Objects on the Horizon". The show runs from Aug 17-Oct 4 with a closing reception and artist talk Oct 4, 1-4pm.
